What stock photos sell in the UK

The subjects, formats and styles that UK buyers actually license, the gaps in most libraries, and a shooting list for contributors who want to earn.

Buyers do not search for ‘beautiful’. They search for ‘nurse and patient’, ‘small business owner’, ‘data centre’, ‘autumn woodland copy space’. Understanding that gap between what photographers like to shoot and what designers need to buy is most of the job.

Reliable sellers

  • Work and workplaces. Real offices, trades, retail, hospitality, healthcare, education, manufacturing, logistics. People genuinely working, ideally model-released.
  • British places. Recognisable UK towns, coast and countryside in good light — but also the unglamorous: retail parks, stations, new-build estates, motorway services.
  • Seasons and weather. Autumn colour, frost, snow, rain, festive lights. Shot months before they are needed.
  • Copy space. Any subject, composed with a calm area for a headline. Landscape and portrait versions of the same scene both sell.
  • Diversity done naturally. Real families, real teams, all ages and backgrounds, without the casting looking like a brochure.

Persistent gaps

Rural and regional Britain outside the tourist spots; small-town high streets; trades and manual work; older people at work and leisure; renewable energy and infrastructure up close; care settings; further education and apprenticeships; British food and drink production.

What does not sell

Sunsets, generic flowers, pets in costumes, heavily processed HDR landscapes, images with visible brands, anything that needs a release you do not have.

Formats

Shoot both orientations. Portrait frames are chronically undersupplied and now needed for every social platform. Leave room to crop to 16:9 and 9:16.

Use the data

Photofolio logs what buyers search for, including searches that return nothing. We share the gaps with contributors as briefs. Fill a gap and you own that keyword until someone shoots it better.
